Metropolitan Area Network also know as (MAN) is a network within the city. It provides LAN to LAN communication using a high speed communication line. There is tow service that support MAN that is DQDB (Distributed Queue Dual Bus) and SMDS (Switched Multimegabit Data Service).
DQDB
Is a protocol that certified by IEEE (IEEE 802.6) standard. DQDB is created especially for MAN and it used dual bus configuration as you can see in the figure 8.16
SMDS
SMDS is a widely use service in MAN. It have been created by Bell Comunication Research (Bellcore) and have been used by the communication provider to communicate between LAN. Figure 8.17 show have is LAN been connected to MAN.
